If you’re thinking about counselling, that already tells me a bit about you. Whilst others may try to solve their problems alone, or to blank out painful feelings through medication or booze, your turning to a counsellor shows a readiness to place your trust in this counsellor who is unknown to you. Your readiness and ability to engage with your counsellor, and my readiness and ability to engage with you, are fundamental to the success of any counselling work. It allows me to share your experiences, to walk a mile in your shoes. In the short term, the bridge of understanding that we build will help us to contain the distress of whatever has brought you to counselling. Then we can begin to think more reflectively together, to develop fresh perspectives. If we continue into longer, deeper work, to make more fundamental changes in your life, it will be the developing and maturing of this counsellor-client relationship that will begin to shape and develop other relationships in your life. |
